Book Club Review – September

‘Jewish is a way of seeing the world, a strong consistent background theme.’

Our book this month is Going Home by Tom Lamont 2024. It is set in the Jewish community in Enfield and centres on Joel, an articulate two-year-old whose mother dies leaving him in the care of her friend Teo. It is about the four adults who take on responsibility for him in their own way. Teo who has moved away from the community to a job in the police force and a flat in Aldgate is the responsible one who takes on the grieving youngster and  learns to care for him and love him. Then there is Ben, the feckless rich boy, the opposite of Teo but also his best friend, and Vic, Teo’s father, dying of a degenerative condition and determined that Joel will not grow up in the care of the Social Services as he once did. Finally, Sybil, the only woman of the four and a progressive rabbi trying in vain to reform the intransigent members of her synagogue. Plus experience the  nostalgia of the beautifully restored musical organ.

Oh and if that wasn’t enough you can take a ride on the miniature railway!

Dog Show Programme Announced


The Fun Dog Show at Hadlow Down Village Fayre will start at 2.30pm, on Saturday 7th September 2024

Please register for classes at the Treasure Hunt Stall, £1 per entry

Rosettes will be awarded to top three in each class

Village Fayre Baking Competition Announced

We are eagerly counting down the days to the Village Fayre on Saturday 7th September!

Our brilliant Baking Competition will be back this year!

We have two categories
– Most delicious cake! Our Judge, Mary-Ann from The Crow Kitchen will be taste testing all your entries. The yummiest cake wins, this is the category for you if you love to bake but don’t have the time to add lots of decoration.
– Best dressed cake – Mary-Ann will be looking for the most fun, beautiful and creatively decorated cake. Our theme is Autumn.

Please bring your entry to the Cake Stall outside the main Marquee between 1pm and 1.30pm.
Judging will be at 2pm
Top three cakes in each category will be awarded rosettes.

All entrants are asked to bring along a list of ingredients used
