The Mayfield Trust – Hardship Grants

THE MAYFIELD TRUST
The Mayfield Trust exists specifically to give grants of money to individuals or families, resident in Mayfield, Five Ashes or Hadlow Down, who find themselves facing financial difficulty. This may be particularly relevant right now as the Covid-19 pandemic impacts on all our lives. If you think you might qualify for a grant from the trust because you are unable to work and / or are incurring extra expenses at the moment either due to Covid-19 or to any other reason, or if you know of someone else in the village in a this situation, do please contact Penny on 830006.

TV License Phishing Scam

Phishing scams seem to be coming thick and fast lately!
These nasty people are probably trying to take advantage of preoccupation with other concerns?
This is the latest to be notified to us and received by someone in the village, it is asking for a new Direct Debit to be set up for TV License renewal. Apart from inaccuracies such as dates etc. note the email address from who/where it was sent!
Never click on links if you are unsure!

Door-to-door Virus Check Scams

Village Volunteers have received information that door to door fraudsters have been operating in West Sussex offering Covid-19 Virus checks that are fake. It is almost inevitable that even if these particular fraudsters don’t target future victims in East Sussex and our local area someone else is liable to.
These are always going to be fake offers and anyone receiving callers at their doors offering virus checks should immediately contact the police.
There are a multitude of other scams regarding the virus that have been reported please watch out for details of them on national and local news stations
Please do not become a fraud statistic by falling for fake calls, emails or any other type of contact regarding the corona virus.

News from the New Village Hall Committee

As you know we are now in the process of applying for grant funding towards the cost of building our New Village Hall. We are also in the early stages of planning some exciting fundraising events, watch this space!

As part of our ongoing efforts we are pleased to announce that we now have a JustGiving page. This means that you will be able to support us through your own fundraising efforts or simply by making a donation directly to us.

Our application for Gift Aid status is in progress. Donating through Gift Aid means charities like us and community amateur sports clubs (CASCs) can claim an extra 25p for every £1 you give. It will not cost you any extra.

You can read all about it over on the New Village Hall Website

Suspicious Activity – Selling ‘Surplus’ Garden Furniture

A man in a large white Peugeot Boxer van. Registration GF18NGX. Has been knocking on doors in the Wilderness Lane area of the village.  He says he is selling ‘surplus garden furniture’  When resident told him he was not interested he asked if I knew anyone around here he could call on.   It is thought he then went along Riverside. Might be legitimate but be aware just in case.
It sounds like very similar activity in the same area about a year ago.  Please report any more incidents to the village Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator at admin@hadlowdown.com or ‘phone 01825 830661

Electricity Outages – Extra Support

Additional Support Is Available In A Power Cut If You Act Now
With Storm Ciara on the way, now is the time to act.
UK Power Networks own and run the electricity cables in most of Sussex, London and the South East, and fix power cuts. Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks does the same in some areas towards the West of the County. They deliver the electricity which you buy through your choice of supplier. They provide a free priority service for anyone who might face extra difficulty in the event of a power cut, including households with an elderly person, young children, someone less mobile or someone with a health condition.
By registering with your distributor you will be given a priority 24-hour phone number for communication, receive extra information and regular updates during any power cut. In the event of a longer power cut you could receive hot food, hot drinks and hot water, mobile phone charging and more. Those who rely on power to run medical equipment, such as dialysis or breathing apparatus, would also receive additional help.
