We'd just like to get an understanding of how often people are accessing the site.

I feel that for the majority of time, users aren't logging in (I don't always either!). There may be even some lurkers out there who haven't yet registered, and still visit us.

If I can just ask you to indicate your usual viewing habits, then we as editors know that we're not merely talking to ourselves

Is the members register confidential because there seems no way of knowing who has registered and who has not - or is it me being dim again?  If people knew their neighbours had not signed up it would be quite easy to have a chat and persuade (and even explain how) them to do so.

No, I believe that if you are logged in, you can just click on the "members" box on the lower right hand side of the home page.

Of the total number of listed members only 15 have actually created a profile since the changeover. Does this not give an indication as to how many have actually logged on and care whether a village web site exists?
How difficult would it be to send all those 'members' without a profile an e-mail detailing the difference between the old site and the new? it could hightlight the better notice board, the better local info pages & downloads, the picture gallery, blogs, etc.
Based on comparitive information from other sites I am convinced that very few of those 'Guest' viewers are actually villagers looking in without logging on, if anything, figures suggest that we should expect an even bigger number of casual strangers dropping in than there are!
There would seem to be a big apathy problem within the village.

I overheard part an interesting conversation within a group of about 6 villagers earlier this week.  They had obviously been talking for some minutes about about the web site - none had logged on since the new site was set up, and the concensus of opinion seemed to be "Who needs a web site when we have such a good Parish Magazine!"
I obviously disagree with the sentiments but my marketing trained mind found it interesting!

Not sure about the profiles but the figures about the number of posts is wrong.  Must be a technical hitch.  You are only credited with 1 post.

There is no reason at all why the Parish Magazine cannot complement the web site and vice versa. The web site will post every future copy of the Parish Magazine which will then be available globally and any villager will be able to make it available without cost or effort to their friends and family in other parts - just give the web address.  If you want to look up an old copy of the Parish Magazine it will be available online and you will not have to scratch about under the stairs to find it.

The Parish Magazine is likely to have an article each month covering issues from the web site and there is no competition between the two.  The one medium can and will promote the other - I hope! They can be even more successful - hand in hand.

The secret to increased membership as far as I'm concerned is appealing content that requires registration. Peter, when you get some of the historic information you're talked about we can put that in a members only area. Announcements of new content in the parish mag should also drive visitors to the site. "If you build it they will come".

Gwyn, Peter
Re Gwyn's comments about 'History pages', is it worth trying to get permission from the 'Hadlow Down Millenium Book Committee' to gradually reproduce extracts from the book into the site.  I think that almost without exception all those who were lucky enough to purchase the book thought the results of the research etc. were brilliant.  It is a shame that those who have come to the village since 1999 and others who missed out at the time will not get the chance to get hold of the book as it seems unlikely that it could be reprinted without a guarantee of around 2-300 sales.  I have spoken to many people who would be willing to pay at least double the original price of the book to get hold of a copy!  (Although nowhere near 200!).
Reproducing some interesting historical extracts could even create enough demand to merit a re-print one day?

There was a flurry of activity in this thread last July (2007) and it suddenly dried up.  Some people, including me from time to time, find it difficult to navigate the site.  As for historical documents I did make an approach but was told the photographs and other documents had a 'value' and they would not be supplied gratis for the village web site. I must say I don't understand village life but I've only been here 13 years.  When I get my licence back I'll spend some times at the Lewes archives and see what I can come up with.  I seem to remember doing this a few years ago and discovered we had a VC buried in the local churchyard.

He was Edmund Costello and I did quite a lot of research about his background and visited the churchyard to take a photograph of the headstone.  It was very neglected and imagine my surprise when I did a quick check as I was doing this note to find it has been refurbished although I haven't been to see it.

BRIGADIER GENERAL EDMOND COSTELLO VC CMG CVO DSO - 22nd Punjab Regiment, Indian Army
28 August 2007 - Grave refurbished in St Mark's Churchyard, Hadlow Down, Sussex

As far as I know this has not been mentioned anywhere - local paper, Parish Magazine, website.  He got his VC over 100 years ago but surely this could have been mentioned by somebody who was connected with the refurbishment.
